Learner Orientation

Ascension Parish Library Adult Literacy Program can help you with your reading and writing. We provide the opportunity for you to meet with a volunteer tutor for a minimum of 2-hours each week.

Do I qualify for tutoring?

  1. Are you 18 years of age or older?

  2. Do you need help with reading and writing?

  3. Can you commit to a minimum of 2-hours of weekly tutoring for a minimum of six months?

If you answered yes to the above questions, then the APL Adult Literacy Program can help you. Tutoring is confidential, free, and offered on a one-to-one basis.

How do I get a tutor?

1. Contact Carlos Contreras or Jeanine Fino at (225)-647-3955 to schedule an orientation.

2. Meet with Carlos to complete orientation. During orientation you will learn more about our program and policies. We will also get to learn more about you, your goals, and assess what materials would best fit your needs.

3. After completing orientation, you will be contacted and paired with a tutor.

What should I expect during Orientation?

Learner Orientation provides the information you need to successfully transition into our program. This meeting will include an interview and a description of the expectations of the literacy program. We understand each learner is unique and has different academic needs. In order for us to properly evaluate and place you in the appropriate level of instruction, you will be asked to take an assessment during orientation. After the initial assessment, you will be matched with a tutor based on your needs and receive instruction that is specific to you. Learners can meet with their tutors at any one of our four library branches: Donaldsonville, Dutchtown, Galvez, or Gonzales
