APL Adult Literacy Program provides comprehensive tutor training for all volunteer literacy tutors.

All Basic Literacy and ESL tutors are required to complete tutor training before being paired with an adult learner. A ProLiteracy certified trainer will instruct participants on techniques and strategies for teaching reading, writing, and basic life skills to adults and English langauge learners.

Volunteer tutors must be 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or the equivalent. No prior teaching experience is required.

We also offer many resources and online support under Tutor Resources.

Tutor/Training FAQ

1. Can I register for training online?

No, we ask volunteers to call or stop by the library, where the training will be held, in order to register.

2. Why is training required?

The tutor training prepares a tutor to plan goal-oriented lessons, select appropriate materials, and learn techniques for working with adult learners. The training also offers you the opportunity to meet fellow tutors and program staff.

3. Is there a cost for training?

No, there is no cost to attend a Literacy Tutor Information Session or to attend the Tutor Training workshops.

4. Can I tutor more than one learner?

Yes, once you have tutored an individual for the initial six month commitment, you may request to be paired with an additional learner.

5. I am part of a group or organization who wishes to participate in Tutor Orientation, but ......registration is full or we cannot make the dates.

Contact the Literacy Coordinator, Carlos Contreras or Jeanine Fino at 225-647-3955.

6. I don't know if I want to be an Adult Literacy Tutor, do I have to make a commitment now?

Attend a Literacy Tutor Information Session, no commitment required. You will learn about what is required to be a tutor, what training entails, and how literacy impacts our community. If you attend a Tutor Training workshop, we ask the volunteer tutors being trained to commit to a minimum of 6 months of tutoring to provide consistency for the learner's educational experience.
